Impact Research is looking for a talented data engineer to join our growing company. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting, storing, processing datain collaboration with our data science team to perform analyses. Your role will focus on helping to choose solutions for collecting/storing/processing data, implementing the solutions, then maintaining and monitoring these solutions.

Impact Research is a small business located in Columbia, Maryland that specializes in transportation data analysis. We are a highly motivated company working on impactful projects in the auto safety and railroad safety industry.


  • Selecting and integrating any tools and frameworks required to provide requested capabilities
  • Implementing and maintaining ETL process
  • Monitoring ETL and data performance and any necessary infrastructure changes
  • Defining and enforcing data retention policies


Basic Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, a related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with clustered technologies
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience working in Linux/Unix environment, including Bash Scripting
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience programming in languages such as Java or Python


Desired Qualifications

  • Proficient understanding of distributed computing principles
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with ETL techniques and frameworks such as Apache Flume, Airflow, Sqoop, Twister or Nifi
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with messaging systems such as Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve ongoing issues with ETL technologies or databases
  • Experience with integration of data from multiple data sources
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as Hbase, MongoDB or Cassandra
  • Working knowledge of big data query tools such as Pig, Hive or Impala
  • Experience working within the AWS eco-system a plus
